I was diagnosed Type 2 diabetic in 2015 a few months after my father died of diabetic complications in his mid 60's. It hit me hard knowing I was going down the path my father took. I didn’t want to become dependent on drugs and a slave to fad diets; so, I began the long process of changing my habits and my lifestyle. First thing I did was quit smoking. Second thing I did was sign up for a local 5K run/walk. I had my first small goal. I went out every day and walked a mile. Then it was 2 miles. Then 3. I started slow running for a minute or two with walk breaks. 5 months later I did the 5K and finished. Next I set another goal of a 10K. I went with the same process and completed it. During those weeks of training, I learned to balance parenting, work, and leisure. I also changed my dietary habits. I cleaned out the fridge and the pantry and began researching clean eating and whole foods. I began eating healthier meals and it created a new hobby for me that I enjoyed— cooking. Over the past 8 years, I have changed my habits, learned how to incorporate exercise, and de-stress my life. Exercise and diet not only effects how you look, but it makes you feel good on the inside. It effects your self-confidence and your attitude. It doesn't happen overnight, but it can happen. I am still on preventative medication for diabetes, but sometimes you just can't swim, bike or run from genetics. But I can control it. And I'm healthier now than I was in my 20's. I've completed 4 marathons, 6 half marathons, several triathlons, and I am a 5 time Half Ironman Finisher, including Ironman South Africa 70.3 in March, 2023.
I realized there are so many people out there who are in the same position I was in. This gave me the push to move forward, to become a personal fitness trainer and an endurance coach. I understand where you are and where you want to be. I understand the frustration of fad diets, losing motivation, and the stress of trying too hard. I can help with all of this, and the best part is it doesn't mean eliminating cake or ice cream forever. Trust me, I have a piece once in a while.
